This Year BRAG (Black, Retail, Action, and Group) HU chapter kicked off their organizations week with a panel discussion entitled Divine Design. Two young fashion designers Adee and Nathaniel Alabi shared their experiences of how they broke into the fashion business. Adee has created unique assecories such as plush pins, panties, hats, rings, earrings, and fitted caps with graphic acrylic detail. His creativity is one that does not go unnoticed. His enthusiastic personality is one that I find very unique in the fashion business, and yet he still remains humble. Currently finishing his junior year at Howard University as a Pre med major Nathaniel created his clothing line LaVita (The Life) just a year ago. Many would ask how Mr. Alabi is able to do it. “Having a strong team behind you is key, also you have to love what you’re doing,” is Mr. Alabi’s response. Having developed his line just a year ago, it has certainly gained a lot of popularity is its short existence. He has worked with celebrities from the likes of Dawn Richards of Dirty Money, Diggy Simmons, Terrence J of 106 &park, rapper Bun B, Slim thug, Coco and Breezy, and stylist Ugo Mozie.
Hearing both designers share their stories was inspiring; one common thread they both share is PASSION. Nathaniel said and important thing and I quote, “Your business will only go as far as you allow it to, if you want to take it far then that’s where it will go.”Believing in your brand is what will draw in consumer acceptance. Not only is the clothing fly but it has meaning behind it, LaVita is all about living THE LIFE! It’s a way of saying to people, always sustain originality, and never aspire to be like anyone or anything else, because being you, is irresistible. This is the same concept the creators use when designing for La Vita. I enjoyed hearing both Adee and Nate they just confirmed that if you have a dream go for it!
