This year the 2016 Olympic Games is making history. Team USA has come to Rio, Brazil ready to bring home the Gold. With about 28 types of sports events being held during the summer Olympics, this event has created a burst of excitement for all sports lovers across the world. With the current state of racial tension in America, the Olympic Games has brought as sense of unity, bringing us all together as one nation cheering for Team USA. History shows that sports has been known as one of the many entities used to unite individuals, from different walks of life, cultures, and languages.

Today we introduce Ibtihaj Muhammad. A Maple wood, New Jersey native and Americas first Muslim African American set to participate in the women’s 2016 Olympic fencing team. That’s right a Black Muslim is representing the United States of America! Oh the irony .Take that Mr. Trump. Muhammad began fencing at the age of 13. She later went on to receive a scholarship to Duke, where she became a three-time All American and 2005 Junior Olympic champion. Earning a dual degree in International Relations and African American Studies she also attended school in Morocco where she completed extensive courses in Moroccan culture and Arabic.

Muhammad’s story is very special and one that resonates with a large population in America specifically the Black and Muslim community.  She is making history as we speak. During the Olympic Games, the public is being introduced to so many remarkable people that live among us, in reality many are our neighbors. “The honor of representing Muslim and black women is one I don’t take lightly,” said Muhammad for Rollingstone. As an African American woman myself, I can be the first to say how inspiring her story is for every little girl who has struggled or is struggling with their identity. This is the first woman to break the barrier for Muslim African American woman. Talk about No Ceilings! This is history, this is what America looks like! Join me as we cheer as one nation for not only Ibtihaj Muhammad but for the rest of Team USA! #Blackgirlmagic

Taking Flight … I’m going to Europe

packing list

After turning 25 years old last month, I decided to come up with a bucket list. On the list I included all the things I wanted to accomplish for the year, from saving money to kicking off a business. I must say my quarter of a century check list was pretty extensive. I knew that turning twenty five was a pretty big deal and should be celebrated by not only my family and friends, but by myself. It’s time that I celebrate me! After talking with my friends I realized we all felt the same way. So many of us are building careers, families, falling in love, and some of us are just trying to get our shit together. However for the most part we don’t give ourselves enough credit for all the accomplishments we have achieved thus far in our lives. My friend Dawn came up with the idea of taking a life changing trip, and being that she had a birthday approaching in August the timing couldn’t be even more perfect. So guess what we did, we got together and planned a trip to Europe.

I’m so excited to check off the box of World Traveling. With so many places to visit on my tourist list, from the Coliseum, the Venice Canal, the city of Pompeii and Rome and not to mention the fashion capital of Milan one issue arises, what should I wear?  As a stylist I usually don’t have a problem putting together a fabulous look. The only hiccup is narrowing down what looks can fit in my luggage (Damn you baggage fees). I promised not to overdo it on the wardrobe lol! Wish me luck! Check out my packing list for Italy below. Milan here we come!

New Years Resolution ……What’s the Point?

2016 banner

With 2016 approaching in a few weeks, it has got me thinking. A LOT! Not on a new year’s resolution but about myself, my purpose, my bad habits, and my truth. It’s made me question how my actions and behaviors over the past year have influenced who I am today. This morning while cleaning my room I came across a notebook where I created a very detailed plan of how I would “Make it Happen in 2015” this was literally my headline for my list. I read over my plans and my descriptions of how I would “make it happen” per say. After reading the list I sat back and realized I haven’t done shit ! I mean I could cross off about 5 out of the 30 things listed, but for me that’s a bit pointless. So I sit back and ask myself, what’s the point of a new year’s resolution?

For me Procrastination is literally my nemesis, my kryptonite, It’s the bad angel that sits on my shoulder. As a person who dreams almost every other second of the day, procrastinating is the last thing I should be partaking in. But ultimately this is something I can control. How hard is it to do what we plan to do? It sound so easy… right? Well it’s actually one of the hardest things for me to beat. So what’s the point of a new year’s resolution, I ask myself again. The Webster definition of Resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something or say what you mean and mean what you say as my mother always says.

So I ask you, what’s the point? Don’t go into the New Year making list that will be disregarded by February. One thing I have learned over the last 365 days is that it doesn’t take forever for your moment to come. Consistency and dedication is key. Also learn yourself, and be honest. You may not be the star but you can contribute to how that star shines. For me I’m going into 2016 learning me , the foundation is set for greatness, and I must make it a priority to discover my point, my purpose and how I can be a better me.  That’s something that no list can match.

Thanks for reading my mental reflection of the day. I hope this helps you when thinking about how you’ll make 2016 a good year for you.

XOXO!
